The Wilton Education Foundation has given Wilton Public Schools a $20,000 donation to be used for professional development of teachers and staff. The decision to present the schools with the donation was made during the Foundation's May 23 board meeting.

Phyllis Dinucci, chariman of Wilton Education Foundation, said the education foundation decided to make a $20,000 contribution to the Wilton schools to supplement its budget for teachers' professional development over this summer. Superintendent of Schools Gary Richards said 40% of the public schools' teaching staff have been in the system fewer than four years and the additional funds would greatly enhance their professional education.

The donation will also help target the school system's priorities, which include differentiated instruction, literacy skills, training for teaching advanced placement courses, gifted education, social studies, mathematics, science, art, technology, and developmental guidance.

Dr. Richards added that the funds will also be used to provide teachers with summer learning opportunities such as Teachers College at Columbia University, Taft Education Center, the College of William and Mary, PIMMS at Wedleyan, the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York City, Yale University, and Bard College. The fund will also be used to send Wilton teachers to state and national conferences, and to invite recognized experts to present in Wilton.
